Of course, a short while later, that one led to another. I chose my second acquisition thoughtfully and went for something more dramatic, selecting the antler for its color and sculptural quality. This example is bleached almost white.
Then I saw this image, captured by designer Brooke Gianetti and featured on her beautiful blog Velvet and Linen, and I left all moderation on the curb. I absolutely love the Alpine chalet vibe of the silver punch bowl filled with antlers - it has me reaching for the Gorsuch catalog and thinking of snowy evenings by the fire.
A few more images that have me planning for holiday decorating already (listen, winter is our longest season and I fully embrace it) - an antler filled garden urn arranged by Swedish stylist and author of the enchanting blog Min Lilla Veranda, Marie Delice Karlsson:
From Marianne Lamberth's exquisite blog Nordic Bliss, a vignette by stylist and photographer Eva Lindh. (Visit Marianne's shop by the same name, Nordic Bliss, for a fabulous selection of home furnishings.)
And this photo by Sacramento interior designer Katie Denham featured on Scot Meacham Wood's entertaining and stylish blog, The Adventures of Tartanscot:
Like the look, but not necessarily the real thing? Pottery Barn has great looking faux antlers.
A few accessories one might need - from Columbus Architectural Salvage, a white, cast iron garden urn:
For those of you who don't have access to an abundance of pine cones, from Balsam Hill, a ready and ample supply:
From Christmas Farms, winterberry stems:
Unscented pillar candles from West Elm:
And from Wisteria, antiqued sheet music votive holders:
We had our first taste of winter today, snow flurries on and off all day, and I am so looking forward to the coming season.
Many thanks to Brooke, Marie, Marianne and Scot for kindly granting permission to have their photos used here! xo

you do have me excited about winter...and the hope of snow flurries. I do have a few antlers scattered about....found in the woods. While I'd love to have more, and my husband willing to oblige...I'd rather Bambi lose her antlers naturally ha.
ReplyDeleteI love your stash of antlers and hope you will show us once you have found the perfect silver vessel. As much as I love them, they don't really feel like they belong in the Southern Hemisphere so I will be content just to admire others' collections. I also love your restrained approach to Christmas decor. Simple and beautiful! x Sharon
ReplyDeleteHi Phyliss,
ReplyDeleteThank you for this, just what I needed to get into the right frame of mind for the hibernation. I am gong to bring out my stash of pine cones and antlers today. Andy and I search for shed antlers on our dog walks in the woods each spring. So exciting to find one, like finding a fully intact conch shell on the beach. I am also a fan of organic holiday displays. Bulbs, berries and greenery fill the house with scent and beauty. Add candles and an interior becomes magical. Thanks for sharing your sources. Columbus Salvage is a great one here in Ohio. Also a huge fan of the Gorsuch catalog, it is a celebration of winter!

Luckily we live where we're able to find the real thing right on the ground, thank you to all our deer friends, we actually feed them....lol. It snowed off and on all day yesterday for us too and I'm getting excited about the coming season. I love your antlers but what really stopped me in my tracks are your stunning antique candlesticks I'm coveting them!

Pottery Barn has some great faux antler candle stick holders right now that go great with holiday decor. I have purchased my set already! - Tonya
ReplyDeleteI love antlers too. As you know the mounted antlers are pretty much a classic. Maybe the naturally shed antlers will become as classic too. The images in your post are perfect inspiration for great ways to display them. Thanks!

Beautiful photos, I love antlers but own only one that my husband found while on a hike. Must find more, love how they look in the old urns :)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful Phyllis. I am like you, and choose to enjoy our long winters. My horses have grown their coats earlier and heavier than usual, so it will be interesting to see....enjoy your day.
ReplyDeletePhyllis,
ReplyDeleteI love the images you found for us. I only have one pair of antlers. They hold appeal for me due to the natural aspect. There is something so pretty about the winter berries, antlers, evergreens and candles that say winter without the glitter. I love the hotel silver I'm seeing that looks old and vintage but holds natures bounty, whether it's green apples or antlers. Great post.

I took awhile to warm up to the antler trend as well Phyllis. I find I use them all the time now in tablescapes, on the coffee table, or on a Christmas wreath. I love them!
ReplyDeleteA late client on 50 acres would collect all kinds of bleached animal parts & use inside.
ReplyDeleteHow I miss her.

I have a silver bowl of antlers too with some pieces of driftwood I picked up on the beach in Maine. I love how the two work so well together.
ReplyDeleteThese are beautiful examples of using antlers. I had no idea they could be purchased on ebay!
ReplyDeleteAnd did I mention by the pound?!? ;-)
DeleteBeautiful images and great examples on how to display them!
ReplyDeleteHi Phyllis,
ReplyDeleteThe antlers look simple and beautifully stylish, and your silver ware is the perfect foil for them.
You are getting me in the mood for winter decoration - berries, foliage, fir cones- I love it all.
Hope you have a lovely day,
Liz x

Thank you, Jennifer! I LOVE it!!
DeleteHi, Phyllis - We are back home. In Denmark, I saw a bunch of antlers (probably from the red deer) and thought of you. I was tempted to bring some back but hesitated. Not sure I'd be able to bring into the country. Customs can be so prickly these days. Perhaps next trip.

Hi Phlyllis, Snow flurries, oh my!! I wish we would get some cooler weather. It is like Spring here in California, flip-flop weather still!! I want some cold Fallish weather!!I love the way you have displayed your antlers. They don't look contrived at all, but look as if you love them and have placed them in a place of honor and yet they blend beautifully with their surroundings. That is what I call good design!!
ReplyDeleteKathysue
Phyllis, suddenly find myself having antler envy. Only have a few but I love the look too! Looking forward to your holiday arrangements. And Iong after the rest of the decorations come down...the antlers can remain. Money well spent if you ask me.
ReplyDeleteMonica
I am so glad you didn't use restraint on this trend...love all of your antlers and happy to learn about buying hotel silver on ebay!! Great ides...

ReplyDeleteHi thinks theres a glitch this is the second time I have left a comment but my name didnt' appear next to it! So strange...anyway hi Phyllis! Hope you are well, thanks for your kind message, its great to be back in blogland. Having a real antler crush too.....yours are so beautiful. Love them! In Europe its not a trend at all, but in fact has been used all over for many many years, it adds so much to a room or a wall. Take care! Hope this comes trough as me, Tina from The Enchanted Home...lol.
ReplyDeleteAntlers, antlers, antlers! Love them and I don't know whether to curse you or praise you since you mentioned that I can buy them by the pound on Ebay! LOL
ReplyDeleteThanks for the fun post Phyllis!
Phyllis I love all of these images of decor with antlers! I had not thought of just how sculptural the antlers can be!

We have one antler -shed - that my husband found in our back yard - years ago, it was when there was a field behind our home....and we see dear often all around us. I do think they are naturally beautiful.

Hey Phyllis! I'm loving the antlers, they do carry that Nordic feel!! Love all the images - I was needing some inspiration this morning!
ReplyDeleteThanks my dear!

I simply LOVE your style and taste! I wish you a wonderfull new week my friend :) Hugs Gry
ReplyDeleteYou've got me inspired to start thinking about Christmas decor this year -starting a bit early so I'm not so crazed and it can be enjoyed for longer. Just saw the comment on Darry Carter. I heard his new store opens Nov 24th so if you're back in DC be sure to put it on your list. A Thoughtful eye posted about the party and the space looks amazing.
ReplyDeleteFabulous post, Phillis! I love antlers and live with a house full of hunters so we have an ample supply! We also sell antler brushes at my shop…the gift for someone that has everything! They are actually calligraphy brushes and quite beautiful! This post has inspired me now for the own Christmas designs! Loved it!
ReplyDeleteAlso, I just realized that I actually used a pair of antlers while helping Holly with her house this past week! There are some on the table in their sunroom! I will tell her to read your post! Take care!
ReplyDeleteInteresting, Phyllis. I love everything you do, but have not gotten into antlers. It's the whole hunting for sport thing - even the faux antlers are kind of creepy. Keep posting about them - I may wind up loving them. Did love the winterberries though.

My mother-in-law tossed some into the pile of goodies that MR. brought along when we married and moved into our little 900 sq. ft. beach cottage. Cursed them for years every time I went to the storage closet to try to find something. Something told me to hang on to them...glad I did!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful sources that you've included Phyllis ~
Ready for snow here too....
XO Lisa
Wow! GORGEOUS home you have and I really like the antlers. I have a few and now I'd like more ;) I'll check ebay ..
ReplyDeleteBeautiful color ~ I never tire of neutrals.
im' with you! I haven't been able to resist the antlers...I can't get enough of them and I'm finding so many fun ways to decorate with them this Christmas! These photos are just gorgeous! thanks for sharing!
